Top Seed Sharapova defeated by Safina at Kremlin Cup

Maria Sharapova’s return to her homeland has not been without its drawbacks; the No.1 seed was defeated today by Dinara Safina in the Kremlin Cup quarterfinals. Maria Sharapova’s return to her homeland has not been without its drawbacks; the No.1 seed was defeated today by Dinara Safina in the Kremlin Cup quarterfinals.

Dinara Safina rallied from a set down to upset
top-ranked Maria Sharapova 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 Friday to advance to the
semifinals of the Kremlin Cup in Moscow.

Sharapova,
making her homeland pro tournament debut, saved a match point in the
seventh game of the third set and rallied to 5-5. She saved one more
match point on her serve in the 12th game before a wide shot ended the
contest.

Sharapova
struggled to reach the quarterfinals. She trailed Anna-Lena Groenefeld
of Germany 1-6 2-4 Wednesday before Groenefeld withdrew with an ankle
injury.
