Davenport not worried about No.1 Ranking

It is rare to see someone on the WTA Tour willing to say that she’s not concerned about her world ranking. It is even rarer to discover that the statement was uttered by someone who is one win from securing the No.1 ranking and possibly finishing her 4th tour season as Number One. But Lindsay Davenport is not your normal WTA star; she knows her priorities lie much deeper than a tennis match.
From Eurosport:
Pete Sampras had sleepless nights when thinking about securing the
year-end world number one ranking. Lindsay Davenport isn’t so precious.
The American, who needs to win one match at the Zurich Open to oust
Maria Sharapova from the top spot, would rather be at home with her
husband.Beat Slovak Daniela Hantuchova in the second round and the 29-year-old will begin her 85th week at the top of the women’s rankings next Monday. However, Davenport told reporters in Zurich on Tuesday, "I’m better off
at home with my family and my husband than being in Europe for three
weeks at this age and at this stage of my career.""I’m not playing for the ranking or I would play every single tournament.
"I
play because I enjoy it and want to do more but my husband and marriage
is my priority and being away for three weeks is not something I’m
willing to do right now."Hot-foot from winning the Filderstadt title on 9 October, the
three-times former Zurich champion believes she has an advantage over
many of her tiring opponents as the season winds down."It’s been a long year for everybody.
But I typically play well indoors and in the past have done very well
in the autumn so hopefully that’ll be the case again."There’s
no question this is the toughest time of year to play but I’m
personally lucky it is indoors. I think some of the points go a little
bit faster and it’s easier for me to serve well."
