Davenport and Sharapova pull out of Advanta Championships

Kim Clijster’s chances at the No.1 ranking just got a whole lot better. Top Seed Lindsay Davenport has pulled out of the Advanta Championships, along with No.2 seed Maria Sharapova. This leaves the field wide open for Amelie Mauresmo and Elena Dementieva, the No.3 & 4 seeds.

American Lindsay Davenport and Russian Maria Sharapova - the top two
seeds - pulled out of the $585,000 Tier II indoor hardcourt event on
Tuesday.The world No. 1, Davenport was diagnosed with the flu, while
Sharapova recently suffered a right thumb sprain during off-court
training."I am very disappointed that I am unable to play the Advanta
Championships this week," Davenport stated. "I am looking forward to
getting healthy and defending my year-end No.1 ranking at the Sony
Ericsson WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles next week."Davenport, Sharapova, third seed Mauresmo and No. 4 Elena Dementieva of Russia had received first-round byes.
