I had every intention of watching Martina Hingis’ match at 2:30 this morning. Honest, I did. I even turned off the Clijsters/Schiavone match when Kim finally won the first set 7-6 in hopes of getting a few hours of sleep before Hingis and Stosur took to the court. I faithfully set my alarm clock for 2:30 and had the remote controls ready. Unfortunately, my subconscious mind had other plans. I barely even remembering turning off the alarm.
Regardless of my lack of loyalty, Kim Clijsters did indeed finish off Francesca Schiavone in straight sets, but not with the finesse that we have begun to expect from the world No.2. Clijsters defeated Schiavone 7-6 (5), 6-4, but she racked up 43 unforced errors. Clijsters really would have been in trouble if Schiavone had managed to convert all fifteen of her break point conversions.
Martina Hingis faced a tough competitor in the form of Australian favorite Samantha Stosur. She raced through the first set in only 29 minutes to win 6-1, but was forced into a second set tie break before winning 7-6 (8). Next up for the Swiss Miss: a meeting with world No.2 Kim Clijsters in the quarterfinals. You will not catch me asleep for this match!
Amelie Mauresmo demolished Nicole Vaidisova 6-1, 6-1 for a berth in the quarterfinals, but she did pull out of her doubles match yesterday with a neck strain. There is no word yet on whether or not this will affect her quarterfinal match against Patty Schnyder who advanced to the quarterfinals after a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Myskina.
