Justine Henin-Hardenne upset world No.1 and top seed Lindsay Davenport 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 yesterday in the Australian Open quarterfinals.
Davenport began the match in a stunning fashion, quickly getting the first set 6-2. But like so many other times in past Grand Slams, she allowed her opponent to get her game together and was completely routed in the next two sets. In what appeared to be a mirror image of the earlier Sharapova/Petrova match, both players struggled throughout the match with errors and double faults. The usually precise and powerful Davenport surrendered seven double faults, while Henin-Hardenne had eleven. Unforced errors also led to Davenport’s demise as she had forty-two compared to Henin-Hardenne’s thirty-three.
Ultimately Davenport’s defeat can be attributed to her serve. For a player that consistently relies on her serve to win matches, the tables were completely turned on her as her first serve percentage was only 54% for the whole match.
Justine Henin-Hardenne will face Maria Sharapova in the semifinals.
