World No. 3 Lindsay Davenport scored another milestone in her impressive resume today at the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open. Davenport, a three-time Grand Slam winner, claimed her 700th career singles victory in her opening round match in Dubai against Russian Elena Likhovtseva.
Davenport not only reached her 700th career victory, but she claimed in a stunning fashion by handing Likhovtseva the dreaded “double-bagel”, or a 6-0, 6-0 victory.
Martina Hingis scored the major upset of the day when she knocked out No. 6 seed Anastasia Myskina in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Her win sets her up for a quarterfinal match-up against world No. 4 Maria Sharapova. Sharapova and Hingis have played only once before at last month’s Toray Pan Pacific when Hingis blew Sharapova away in straight sets.
Australian Open Justine Henin-Hardenne survived an opening round scare from qualifier Kateryna Bondarenko. Although the score was 6-4, 7-5, Henin-Hardenne clearly was not playing at her top form and narrowly avoided playing three sets. Bondarenko is only ranked at No. 142 compared to Henin-Hardenne’s No. 5.
Other winners today at the Dubai Duty Free Women’s Open include Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova, Francesca Schiavone, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Maria Kirilenko.
