Svetlana Kuznetsova stopped No. 1 seed Amelie Mauresmo’s bid to overtake Kim Clijsters for the No. 1 ranking today in Dubai. Kuznetsova came back from a rain delay yesterday to defeat Mauresmo 7-6 (11), 6-4. Mauresmo needed to reach the final round in order to get enough points to pass Clijsters. She is scheduled to play her fourth straight tournament in Doha, Qatar next week, but she is defending 100 semifinalist points.
Lindsay Davenport, the No. 2 seed, managed to come back from behind to defeat teenager Maria Kirilenko in three sets. Davenport, the 2005 champion, lost the first set4-6, but won the final two sets 6-2, 6-3.
Maria Sharapova avenged her straight sets loss earlier this year to Martina Hingis by returning the favor this morning at Dubai. Sharapova defeated Hingis in straight sets 6-3, 6-4.
No. 4 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne claimed her berth in the semifinals by defeating Italy’s Francesca Schiavone 6-4, 7-6 (5).
The semifinal rounds have already begun in Dubai with Svetlana Kuznetsova taking on No. 4 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne, followed by No. 2 Lindsay Davenport and No. 3 Maria Sharapova.
