World No. 5 Maria Sharapova capped of an impressive two weeks at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California with a straight sets win over fourth seed Elena Dementieva. Sharapova, the No. 3 seed, failed to drop a set throughout the entire tennis tournament and routed Dementieva 6-2, 6-1.
Although Dementieva cleaned up her serve compared to her previous matches, she was still not able to compete against the penetrating accuracy and skill of Sharapova.
The wind played a huge factor in the match, but Sharapova was able to take advantage of Dementieva’s errors and break her serve seven times.
The Pacific Life Open title was Sharapova’s eleventh career title and the first since last June at Birmingham. She received $332, 000 (USD) in prize money, while Dementieva took home $163, 000.
