Venus defeats Patty Schnyder in three sets at Rome

American Venus Williams needed three sets, but she managed to chalk up a win against Switzerland’s Patty Schnyder at the Internazionali d’Italia in Rome, Italy.
Williams, who is the ninth seed at the Tier I tennis tournament, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-6(2), 3-6, 6-1 win. She will face Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals tomorrow. Jankovic defeated Slovenia’s Katarina Srebotnik 7-6(7), 6-1 earlier today.
In another third round match this afternoon, unseeded Martina Hingis defeated Italy’s hopeful Francesca Schiavone in straight sets 6-0, 7-5. Hingis, who is currently at a comeback high of No. 21, won the title in 1998. She will next play another Italian, fifteenth seed Flavia Pennetta. Pennetta won her third round match against Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Earlier action today at the Italian Open included Svetlana Kuznetsova’s win over Anastasia Myskina and Dinara Safina’s defeat of Kim Clijsters.
