Martina Hingis fires past Lisa Raymond for Roland Garros win

Roland Garros

Former world number one Martina Hingis won her first tennis match today at Roland Garros in five years when she blitzed past American veteran Lisa Raymond in straight sets 6 -2, 6-2 in the first round.

With the conditions in Paris blustery and cold, Hingis effectively nixed Raymond’s attempts to turn the match into a serve-and-volley game. After a short delay at the start of the match when Hingis was asked to remove a sponsors logo that was too large, Hingis came back out on court and fired past Raymond in only 54 minutes.

Although her victory was an easy one against Raymond, who is an eight-time Grand Slam doubles champion, the match showed once again that Hingis’ serve is the one shot still missing from her arsenal. A 53% first serve percentage was more than enough to get her past Raymond, but players like Kim Clijsters and Elena Dementieva, who are in Hingis’ quarter of the draw, will attack her second serve with a vengeance.

Martina Hingis will play the winner of the Julia Schruff/Zuzana Ondraskova match in the second round.
