Dinara Safina outlasted her brother Marat at a Grand Slam for the first time in their careers when she scored a spot in the third round after defeating Czech Republic’s Hana Sromova 6-0, 6-2.

Two of France’s up and coming players advanced with big wins to the next round. Aravane Rezai knocked out (22) Ai Sugiyama in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Alize Cornet outlasted doubles specialist Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.

Slovakia’s Katarina Srebotnik halted American Ashley Harkleroad with a 6-3 6-2 victory and Italy’s Flavia Pennetta blasted past Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens 6-0, 6-1.

Fourth seed Maria Sharapova was able to begin her match against Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova and she leads Benesova 3-2 in the first set.

(1) Amelie Mauresmo, (7) Patty Schnyder, (8) Svetlana Kuznetsova, (9) Francesca Schiavone, and (11) Venus Williams have yet to take to the courts.
