Fourth seed Maria Sharapova is through to the third round of Roland Garros after trouncing Czech Republic’s Iveta Benesova in straight sets 6-4, 6-1 today in Paris.
Sharapova’s run so far at the French Open has not exactly been a walk in the park. She was pretty unhappy about having to play on Sunday, instead of a traditional start later in the week, and then she barely avoided an upset in her first round match against American Mashona Washington.
Today’s match against Benesova did not see Sharapova facing an upset, but her match was suspended a couple of times because of the intermittent rain.
Update: When asked about the status of her injured ankle after the match, Sharapova admitted that it still is hampering her performance at Roland Garros.
Sharapova, recovering from an ankle injury she aggravated last week, moved well on the center-court clay.
“It was a lot better than my previous match,” she said. “I didn’t feel like I was moving great still, being cautious with the tape on, but pain-wise it felt a lot better.”
