Roland Garros

Elena Dementieva narrowly escaped defeat yesterday against Viktoriya Kutuzova, but today her run for her first Grand Slam title ended against Israel’s Shahar Peer.

Peer knocked out the number six seed in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 today at Roland Garros. Although Peer won in a little over an hour and a half, she could have ended the match much earlier if she had capitalized on Dementieva’s mistakes. Dementieva once again struggled with her serve and gave Peer fourteen break point chances. Peer was only able to convert five.

Peer continues to shoot up the Sony Ericsson WTA rankings and has already won three titles this season. She will face either Ivana Lisjak or Martina Hingis in the fourth round.
