Former world number one Martina Hingis advanced to the quarterfinals of Roland Garros today after outlasting Israel’s Shahar Peer in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
Hingis and Peer took to the court for their first career meeting late Sunday evening, but the tennis match was suspended at one set-all because of the fading light.
After resuming the match this afternoon, Martina Hingis needed only thirty-six minutes to secure her berth in the quarterfinals. She will face world number two Kim Clijsters in a rematch of their Australian Open quarterfinal earlier this season.
Hingis was asked in her post-match press conference if there was anything different about facing Kim tomorrow compared to their last meeting in January.
I think it’s a big difference. I’ve made a lot of improvements since Australia. Everything pretty much was new. I was happy to win the first round. Now I would be disappointed if I didn’t make the quarters. I think that’s the biggest difference, you know.
On clay, it’s, like I said, physically more demanding because there’s longer rallies and all this, but it’s also in my advantage because you have more time and you can play your game better.
So we’ll see, you know. Just got to come up with the best.
