With Amelie Mauresmo out of the running at Roland Garros, Kim Clijsters now has a chance to regain the number one ranking.
As of the latest May 29th rankings, Amelie Mauresmo and Kim Clijsters were just 224 points apart. In 2005, Amelie Mauresmo lost in the third round of the French Open and only gained 70 ranking points. On the other hand, Kim Clijsters made it to the round of 16 and added 154 points to her ranking.
Mauresmo’s exit in the fourth round will only give her 96 points, handing Kim Clijsters another opportunity to take over the top spot. Clijsters is currently in the quarterfinal round and if she manages to reach the final on Saturday, she should be the new world number one when the updated rankings come out next week.
Clijsters will face Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals, with a potential match between Justine Henin-Hardenne or Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the semifinals. Her last chance to take over the top ranking was at the Internazionali d’Italia.
