Justine Henin-Hardenne in Roland Garros Ladies Final

Roland Garros

Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne advanced to her third career Roland Garros final after crushing world number two Kim Clijsters in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.

Fifth-seeded Henin-Hardenne denied Clijsters not only a win on her 23rd birthday, but her opportunity to take over the number one ranking from Amelie Mauresmo. Clijsters, who also shares a birthday with American Lindsay Davenport and Russia’s Nadia Petrova, needed to reach at least the final round to ascend to the top spot on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour tennis rankings.

Kim Clijsters was no match for the accuracy and skill of her fellow Belgian Justine Henin-Hardenne today in Paris. Henin-Hardenne scored the first break at 4-3 in the opening set against Clijsters, and she easily took the first set 6-3. Clijsters then handed Henin-Hardenne the lead early in the second set at 1-all, and Henin-Hardenne raced through to close out the last set in less than thirty minutes 6-2.

Henin-Hardenne will face Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova in French Open ladies final on Saturday.
