World number four Maria Sharapova discovered today that she is not nearly as invincible on grass tennis courts as she hoped to be heading into Wimbledon. The 2004 Wimbledon champion was knocked out of the Tier III DFS Classic this evening in Birmingham, England by American Jamea Jackson.
Jackson, who helped lead the United States to victory in the quarterfinals of Fed Cup this past April, defeated the top seed and two-time defending champion in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
This loss has to be pretty rough on Sharapova, and one can only imagine what will be going on in her head during the next few days. Wimbledon starts in just eight days and Maria is one of top contenders for the title.
Jamea Jackson will face Russia’s Vera Zvonareva in Sunday’s final.
