Lindsay Davenport withdraws from Wimbledon

The Championships at Wimbledon

Former world number one Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from next week’s Championship at Wimbledon, according to this AP story. Davenport, who won the title at Wimbledon in 1999, decided to withdraw because of an ailing back injury.

Davenport’s withdrawal is not much of a surprise, especially as her agent Tony Godsick hinted that it might occur only a few weeks ago. Nonetheless, this is still a tough blow for the three-time Grand Slam champion and American tennis fans. She turned thirty only a few weeks ago, and I wonder if she will be considering retiring from professional tennis in the near future.
