Current world number two Kim Clijsters scored a straight sets win over Russia’s Vera Zvonareva, but it was certainly not without its challenges.

The match was suspended yesterday when Clijsters held the early break at 5-4, but it was not until late this afternoon that the 2004 US Open Champion was finally able to end the match 7-5, 6-3. Zvonareva, the winner of the DFS Classic on grass only two weeks ago, pushed Clijsters throughout the match and even managed to break the former No. 1’s serve three times.

When a reporter asked her in her post-match interview if she is feeling focused, Clijsters replied:

You always have to be focused. You don’t want any surprises to happen out there. That’s why you just try to just focus mainly on your own game. You have a good opponent standing in front of you, but you just try to, like I said, try to work on things yourself, try to focus on yourself. That’s the only thing you can try to do out there is give it your best and, like I said, fight for every point.

Kim Clijsters will face the Ukraine’s Viktoria Kutuzova in the second round.
