The Championships at Wimbledon

Rain was not the only thing going down the drains at the All England Tennis Club yesterday; the organizers of this year’s Championships at Wimbledon have quickly found themselves out of 1 million pounds, thanks to rain delay which lasted for most of Monday’s matches.

The All England Lawn and Tennis Club has a rain policy that is, please pardon the pun, almost water tight. Tickets will only be refunded if less than one hour of action is played on the tennis courts. If Wimbledon refunded tickets every single time it rained on the grounds of SW19, they would probably be giving away the tickets.

The All England Club was left to foot the bill after persistent rain meant only 44 minutes of play were possible on the opening day at Wimbledon. The Club offers full refunds if less than one hour’s play is possible and that is likely to cost it somewhere in the region of £1million. Wimbledon dropped its insurance policy two years ago because of high premiums.

Only sixteen minutes short of one hour of tennis play equals the AELTC refunding 1 million pounds. Ouch!

The article says 1million, not 100million.

    There’s a bit of a difference there.
