Maria Sharapova rolls in first round at Wimbledon

Former Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova needed only 52 minutes to get past Israel’s Anna Smashnova in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 this afternoon at Wimbledon.
Sharapova, who first rocketed to stardom on the grass courts at SW19 in 2004, proved that she is eager to roll on grass once again. She is one of the favorites to win the title, but she has a tricky half of the draw that contains not only world No. 1 Amelie Mauresmo, but last year’s champion Venus Williams.
Maria will face either Jelena Kostanic or Ashley Harkleroad in the second round.
