Bethanie Mattek made the main draw of Wimbledon for the first time in her career, but you would have thought she was headed into a World Cup soccer match instead of playing on one of the most prestigious tennis courts in the world.

When Mattek headed onto Centre Court this afternoon with Venus Williams, instead of the focus being on the 2005 defending champion, most of the eyes were drawn to Mattek’s interesting choice of tennis attire, most notably, her tube socks. Her Sony Ericsson WTA Tour profile states that she plays in basketball shoes, so maybe she just decided to wear the retro socks to complete the look. It is not everyday that a player’s socks draw attention, but Mattek definitely outdid fashion queen Venus when it came to style today.

Unfortunately for Mattek, she needed more than her tube socks to gain an advantage over Williams in their first round match today at Wimbledon. Mattek managed to hold her first service game of the match, but after that Venus reigned supreme on Center Court. The sixth seed needed only 51 minutes to get past her fellow American in straight sets 6-1, 6-0.

Venus will face another American, Lisa Raymond, in the second round.
