Defending champion Venus Williams crashed out of Wimbledon today at the hands of Serbia and Montenegro’s Jelena Jankovic, the No. 26 seed. Jankovic stunned Williams on the so-called Graveyard of Champions, Court 2, 7-6(8), 4-6, 6-4.
Amelie Mauresmo scored a straight sets 6-1, 6-2 win over Nicole Pratt, Maria Sharapova eased into the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over American Amy Frazier, and Elena Dementieva fought off Elena Likhovtseva 7-5, 6-3.
With James Blake, Andy Roddick, Venus Williams, and Andre Agassi out of Wimbledon, Americans now have a new player to cheer for, Shenay Perry. Perry reached the round of sixteen at a Grand Slam for the first time in her career after a 7-5, 6-3 win over Sybille Bammer.
