It only seemed like yesterday that tennis analysts were crying, “The Russians are Coming”, but now it is starting to look like China will be providing the next wave of stars on the tennis courts.

Na Li, who is China’s No. 1 ladies singles player, has continued her historic run at the 2006 Championships at Wimbledon with a thrilling 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win over tenth seeded Nicole Vaidisova.

The battle today on Court 3 could have been summed up as a David beats Goliath victory as petite 5′7 3/4″ Li out-slugged the power and height of six-foot Vaidisova.

A lot of comparisons have been made between Vaidisova and her blond look-a-like Maria Sharapova, but the grass courts of Wimbledon were definitely not as kind to Vaidisova as they were to Maria in 2004. She has solidified her spot as a key player in the top fifteen, but I just do not feel that Vaidisova’s game is yet at a point to make her a consistent top-ten player.

Na Li will face the winner of the Agnieszka Radwanska/Kim Clijsters match in the quarterfinals.
