Australia’s Alicia Molik has been awarded gold exemption status from the officials at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Molik, who has recently returned to professional action after a lay-off from injury, will now be able to enter top tournaments on a wildcard entry.

Privileges extended to Molik mean she can make late entries by claiming wildcards for a certain number of tournaments.

Tournament directors can “claim” a specified number of players based on how much prizemoney their tournaments are outlaying.

One other unique tidbit that the Advertiser mentions is that Alicia Molik gained gold exemption status because the WTA Tour removed Jennifer Capriati off of the list. This obviously does not imply that she will never return to action, but at this point, the officials at the tour might know that she has no intention of returning in the near future, or else she probably would have remained on the list.
