A new champion was crowned today at the 120th Championships at Wimbledon and Amelie Mauresmo has emphatically proved that she is the number one player on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
Although heavy favorite Justine Henin-Hardenne tried to play today’s grass court match as if she was on the courts of Roland Garros, she was still no match for the brilliance of France’s Amelie Mauresmo.
Henin-Hardenne started the match aggressively and broke Mauresmo’s serve in the first game of the match. Although Amelie tried mixing up her game, she was still was not able to mount a charge against Henin-Hardenne, who took the first set 6-2 in just 31 minutes.
The second set started similar to the first, except that it was Mauresmo who broke Justine’s serve in the Belgian’s first service game. Mauresmo continued to dominate and served out the set with a blistering ace up the middle to level the match at one set each.
Mauresmo’s momentum continued in the third, when she was able to break Henin-Hardenne at 1-all for the early lead and power her way to the title 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
I must admit that I was floored when I saw Mauresmo’s performance today. Henin-Hardenne stormed through the first set, but Amelie kept her cool, mixed up her shots, and even had the confidence to serve out the Championships on her first Championship point. In the end, the best tennis player won today on the grounds of SW19.

Maurismo played the most important part of the match with intensity — the beginning of the second set. Thus she capitalized on JHH’s natural letdown then to go up 2-0. That was all the opening she needed. She never let up then till it was over, never got shaky over a few errors. You have to hand it to Maurismo, she won a tough match even while not playing her best. That’s a winner.

I wasn’t really surprised by the Mauresmo victory. I called it the day before ;-). I think for Mauresmo the Sharapova match was the trickier one, because getting through the semi-final was the mental barrier she had not been able to burst through in 3 previous tries although she had always led in them. I think having to play Henin-Hardenne actually helped Mauresmo because mentally she really REALLY wanted to prove to the world she could beat the Belgian in a final. And she did. I’ve been smiling all weekend.
Did you notice there has been almost no coverage of the fact Amelie is openly lesbian?
