Serena Williams will play first tennis match at Cincinnati on July 18

The Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open is certainly making the most of having Serena Williams entered into their tennis tournament as a wildcard. In hopes of attracting more fans to the Tier III event, they have announced a week in advance when Serena’s first match will be played.

Usually, the WTA Tour and Flory [Bruce Flory, the tournament director] wouldn’t announce when a player is scheduled to perform until the day before the match.

In Serena Williams’ case, they’ll make an exception.

Flory said Monday that Williams was scheduled to make her return to the tour at 7 p.m. July 18 in the first round of the Western & Southern Women’s Open.

Serena’s first round opponent will not be known until the main draw is announced, just prior to the start of the tournament. Some of the other players entered into this event include Patty Schnyder, Anastasia Myskina, and Daniela Hantuchova.
