REPORT: Lindsay Davenport pulled out of Wimbledon because of concussion, not back

Christopher Clarey at The New York Times is reporting that former world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport pulled out of the Championships at Wimbledon because of a concussion, not the previously assumed back injury.

After resuming training in her native California before Wimbledon, she fell at home and sustained a concussion along with other as-yet-unconfirmed injuries. In an e-mail message forwarded by her agent, Tony Godsick, Davenport confirmed that she had injured herself in the fall but did not give details.

Although Davenport has been off the tennis tour for the past few months because of her back, the main questions that arise after reading this article are regarding the extent of Lindsay’s “unconfirmed injuries.”

Lindsay Davenport is holding onto the United States’ only spot in the top ten by a slim margin of points over Anastasia Myskina. She is scheduled at the Bank of the West Classic later this month in her native California.

as a fan of lindsay davenport, her not playing at wimbledon because of concussion and unconfirmed injuries is a cause for lot of concern not only for her health but maybe her career as well. will she recover in time for the hardcourt season or will this be enough reason for her to finally retire? i hope and pray that it is not so. i long to see her back, to play and win the us open :)

well, i think that the unconfirmed injury was probably her back again as she has now withdrawn from stanford, as the cycle continues. concussions are nasty, and that alone puts you in bed for a week to a week in a half. if she hurt her back again, then that’s it as far as i am concerned.
    she’ll just walk away.
i wish she just come clean and announce what’s going on with her.

but, i have said it alot, if she doesn’t return by the us open, she never will. she has no reason to.

Jeanmarie, thanks for the heads up - I had not yet read that Davenport officially withdrew.
