The United States’ dreams of reaching the final of the 2006 Fed Cup were all but dashed today when Kim Clijsters led the Belgium squad to a decisive 2-0 lead over Team USA in the semifinals.
Jamea Jackson and Jill Craybas looked like they were going to score the upset today over host nation Belgium, but they both ended up losing in three sets. Craybas had the lead over Kirsten Flipkens, but Flipkens recovered to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Jamea Jackson gained the early advantage over world No. 2 Kim Clijsters, but like her countrywoman, Clijsters rebounded to win in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
It is not impossible for the United States to win, but their 0-2 deficit against Belgium puts them in a sudden death position, as all Belgium needs is one more match. If Kim Clijsters can defeat Jill Craybas tomorrow in the the third match of the tie, Belgium will gain a berth in the finals.
Sunday’s Matches:
Kim Clijsters (BEL) vs. Jill Craybas (USA)
Kirsten Flipkens (BEL) vs. Jamea Jackson (USA)
Leslie Butkiewicz/Caroline Maes (BEL) vs. Vania King/Mashona Washington (USA)
