MeshTennis is more than just a way to find a new playing partner; you can search for courts in your area by metropolis or even zip code, complete with satellite imagery. The groups feature allows you to create or join a tennis team in your area, complete with ways to record matches and special events. I tried out MeshTennis at the suggestion of the owner, Chris, and I was more than pleased with the features they offer completely free for fans. One of the features that sold me obviously, was the tennis blog section, which I am happy to report is serving up the headlines from On the Baseline.
The player search is its most impressive feature and you can connect with a potential playing partner based on their location, high school, university, and even their local country club. I tried out the player search, and I was not surprised to see only about thirty listings for my immediate area, especially as I hale from a part of Texas more interested in Friday night football and baseball than sweating it out on the tennis court. My lack of success certainly will not apply to most people, as over 2000 people have signed up on the site in just the few months that it has been around. Tennis fans near big cities such as NYC and Los Angeles should have no problem finding someone to play a set or two.
Overall the site is well-designed, the owner is very helpful, and you do not have to worry about all your personal contact information floating around the internet for all the world to see. The only way that you can be contacted by a potential playing partner is through the instant messaging feature. Registration is simple and can be finished in just a few minutes. The only downside to the service that I noticed is not being able to sort the results by NTRP ranking or preferred match type. This is not much of a problem for me, but if you live in an area with 100′s of registered users, it could be a pain to go through all the listings to find all the players on your level.
