Sania Mirza reaches 1st Quarterfinal of 2006 at Cincinnati

It is a small start, but definitely an improvement for the player who claims to have “a billion people watching my every step.”

Sania Mirza, India’s resident celebrity/tennis star, has reached her first quarterfinal of the 2006 season at this week’s Western & Southern Financial Group Women’s Open in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Mirza’s career so far has hardly lived up to the hype that she continues to receive both on and off the court. You could almost start calling her the “Anna Kournikova” of this generation, but Mirza has won a tour title, a Tier IV in Hyderabad in front of a home crowd. She has the hype, the star-quality, even a “fatwa” issued against her, but the only thing that has been lacking is her performance on the tennis courts. She has consistently hovered around the 30’s and 40’s on the rankings, but never seems to win the matches that matter the most.

Her chances at making it past No. 1 seed Patty Schnyder in the quarterfinals are pretty slim, but if Mirza could somehow win, she may be able to start getting her career on the fast-track to real tennis stardom.
