Serena Williams may have returned to action on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour two months before the final Grand Slam of the 2006 season, but it is still not soon enough for her to receive direct entry into the US Open.
Her ranking, which is currently at No. 139, is not high enough to grant her the benefit of a direct entrance, but she does not have to worry about playing through the qualifying rounds as the USTA has already stated that they will grant her a wildcard, according to USA Today.
Never before in her eleven years on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and her seven appearances at the US Open has Serena needed a singles wildcard into the Grand Slam tournament.
