France’s Tatiana Golovin has had a tough road to recovery since her ankle injury at the NASDAQ-100 Open in March, but it looks like she is once again ready to contend on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.
She advanced to the second round of the Bank of the West Classic tonight with a convincing 7-5, 6-2 win over Alona Bondarenko and will next face the winner of the Ai Sugiyama/Kveta Peschke match.
It was during her three set match against Maria Sharapova in Miami that she slipped and tore ligaments in her left ankle. She officially returned to competition in June at the French Open, but she has had a difficult time in the last few months.
“I had to start from zero again,” she said. “My left leg lost everything from not doing anything. It still gets sore after matches but the doctor said it would be sore for another two months.”

The AP wire story at the Mercury News incorrectly claims that this was Golovin’s first tennis win since March. She actually won her opening round match at Wimbledon over Mariana Diaz-Olivia, before crashing out in the second round to Nicole Pratt.
