Patty Schnyder outlasted an exhausted Tatiana Golovin to set up a meeting with top seed Kim Clijsters in the final of the Bank of the West Classic in Stanford, California. Schnyder, who is seeded at No. 2, will face Clijsters tomorrow in the final which will be broadcasted on ESPN2.
Schnyder raced to a 3-0 lead before Golovin was finally able to get on the scoreboard. Schnyder had no problem dictating shots in the beginning of the set, but Golovin was able to recover and force a tiebreak, which Schnyder won 7-6(4). Golovin lost the momentum she had toward the end of the first set at 1-1 in the second, and Schnyder easily ended the match 7-6(4), 6-1.
It was a pity that Golovin ran out of gas against Schnyder because she looked like she had a chance of scoring the upset. Her results this past week were encouraging and she is entered into the Acura Classic in San Diego next week.
Schnyder and Clijsters have played on six occasions in the past, with Clijsters leading 4-2.
