Mary Pierce won her first match since February at the Acura Classic in San Diego today, but she had to fight much harder than she planned to secure the win.
Austria’s Sybille Bammer, who is ranked at No. 46 in the world, had a chance to serve for the match against the two-time Grand Slam champion, but Pierce was not going to be denied a hard-fought victory.
She began the match strong, blitzing past Bammer 6-1 in the first set, but her game play slipped during the second and much of the third set. Bammer tried to serve the match out at 5-4, but Pierce was able to break Bammer’s serve for the fifth time to remain in the match. The match then went into a third set tiebreak, which Pierce won to end the match 6-1, 6-7(7), 7-6(4).
Pierce will face the winner of the Emma Laine/Elena Vesnina match in the third round.
