Nicole Vaidisova first to reach Acura Classic Tennis Semifinals

The Czech Republic’s Nicole Vaidisova reached the semifinals of the 2006 Acura Classic in San Diego, California this afternoon after defeating her fellow teenager Anna Chakvetadze of Russia.
Chakvetadze looked like she was headed for her first ever Tier I semifinal when she took the first set 6-3, but Vaidisova recovered to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-3.
Vaidisova has an excellent chance of reaching the top ten for the first time in her young career when the points from this year’s event are added to the rankings. She did not play here last season, and a berth in the semifinals guarantees her a minimum of 135 ranking points. Her spot in the top ten is not yet 100% certain, especially until we see how far Martina Hingis, who is also not defending any points, goes into the draw.
Update:The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has made it official; Vaidisova will reach the top ten on Monday when the latest rankings are released.
