On Court:

Lindsay Davenport is set to return to tennis for the first time since March at the JPMorgan Chase Open tennis tournament in Carson, California. Davenport is seeded fourth at this week’s event, just behind Maria Sharapova, Nadia Petrova, and Elena Dementieva. Serena Williams is entered into the draw as well, thanks to a wildcard. The 2006 Nordea Nordic Light Open is also taking place this week in Stockholm, Sweden. World No. 11 Anastasia Myskina is headlining a field that also includes China’s Na Li and Ji Zheng. On the Baseline’s tournament at a glance is available here.

Last Week’s Recap:

Maria Sharapova snapped Kim Clijsters’ hardcourt streak when she claimed the title at the Acura Classic in San Diego on Sunday. Sharapova beat Clijsters 7-5, 7-5. Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs won the ladies doubles trophy after defeating Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy in straight sets 6-2, 6-2.

Ups and Downs:

Nicole Vaidisova reached the top ten for the first time in her young career when the new rankings were released this morning. Her entrance into the top ten knocked Mary Pierce down to No. 13.

Martina Hingis is at a new comeback high of No. 12 in the world after she reached the quarterfinals of the Acura Classic before losing to Kim Clijsters. Spain’s Anabel Medina Garrigues has continued her ascent up the rankings and she is now at a new career high of No. 23.

Ai Sugiyama saw her ranking fall out of the top twenty from No. 19 to No. 27, Martina Muller is inside the top fifty for the first time at No. 48, Elena Vesnina is now the eleventh ranked Russian at No. 49, Finland’s Emma Laine is at a career high of No. 50, and the United States’s Vania King is at a new high of No. 78.
