Maria Sharapova joins withdrawal list at Montreal

Apparently this is just is not the year for a full field at the Rogers Cup tournament in Montreal. You can only imagine the thoughts going through the tournament director Eugenne Lapierre’s head each time his phone rings, only to tell him that yet another player has withdrawn from his event. The latest star to pull out is No. 2 seed Maria Sharapova.

“I’m deeply saddened to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup,” Sharapova said in a statement. “Unfortunately, my body is very fatigued because of the extensive number of matches that I have played over a short period of time, and I don’t feel that I can perform at the level required.

I seriously doubted that Maria would turn up in Montreal and it was only hours after her semifinal loss today at Carson that her withdrawal was made official. Her replacement in the main draw has not yet been announced.
