Top-seeded Kim Clijsters was forced to retire tonight at the Rogers Cup tennis tournament in Montreal, Canada after injuring her left wrist.
Clijsters has a long history of injuries, and it was an injury in this same wrist that knocked her out of competition in 2004. She led Stephanie Dubois 6-1 in the first set, but it was during the beginning of the second set that she fell and landed on her already fragile wrist.
It is still too early to know her chances of participating at the US Open in just ten days, but Clijsters will be undergoing tests tomorrow.
“I’m going to have an MRI Thursday and see what the doctors say,†Clijsters said. “I have to wait and see what the tests show to see if there is any damage. Right now I just don’t know.â€
“My wrist felt really tight. I was slicing more than usual to protect it. It was hurting and then I slipped and landed on it in the worst position possible.â€
