Nadia Petrova Loses in First Tennis Match at Montreal

As if the Rogers Cup’s organizers did not have a hard enough time getting players to come to Montreal, they are now losing their seeded players before the second round of action is even completed. Kim Clijsters, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Anastasia Myskina have not yet played their opening round matches, but three of the top ten seeds have already tumbled out of the tournament.
Nadia Petrova has lost in her first match for the past three events, and her performance today was no different. Another Russian, Anna Chakvetadze, who knocked her out in San Diego, defeated the No. 2 seed in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Eight-seeded Francesca Schiavone lost to last week’s JPMorgan Chase Open finalist Jelena Jankovic in two sets also this afternoon in Montreal. Jankovic ousted Schiavone 6-1, 6-4 and Shenay Perry defeated No. 10 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld 7-6(5), 6-2.
5:10PM - Anastasia Myskina just joined the other seeds on the sidelines; Shahar Peer defeated her 7-6(6), 5-7, 6-4.
8:40PM - I have a feeling that the officials at the Rogers Cup will be glad to see this PR nightmare of a week behind them. Just when it looked like nothing else could go wrong at the event, the tournament lost its top seed, Kim Clijsters. (Special thanks to Momofan for posting the details in the comments) Apparently she was up a set 6-1 against Stephanie Dubois when she retired because of a bad wrist injury. Be sure to check out the comments for Momofan’s report. I will definitely be posting more on Clijsters’ injury soon, especially as it concerns her chances of repeating at the US Open in just 10 days.

More bad news for the tournament: The No. 1 seed and defending champ, Kim Clijsters, just retired in her second round match against STephanie DUbois with a left wrist injury. She had seen the trainer to get it taped but afterwards was able to only slice her backhand due to the pain. She was at the net later (while trailing by a break in the second set) when Dubois hit a passing shot and Kim fell on her wrist while trying to hit it. I am really sad right now, but I’m hoping and praying that she’s able to compete at the Open. Looks like the story on this year’s Sony Ericsson WTA Tour has been a very sad one: Injuries.

Momofan, thanks at ton for the heads up!
This definitely does not bode well for Kim, especially as this is the same wrist that knocked her out of competition in 2004. I wonder how bad she injured it and if she will even be able to show up in Flushing Meadows now.

Hi Aaress. I just saw the replay on the Tennis Channel and it was pretty ugly. The fact that Kimmie started slicing her backhands from the end of the first set into the beginning of the second is pretty scary. The fact that she then broke her fall with it is even sacrier. Oh, and she called for the trainer to tape and then re-tape her wrist twice before she even fell. But I that her retirement was a good thing in terms of her chances at the Open — I certainly did not want to see any “heroics” from her tonight. I’m hoping for the best from her MRI tomorrow. I wish her the best of luck; she really is the nicest girl on tour and it’s just a shame about all these injuries ravagin the Tour right now.

Thanks - hopefully we will hear sometime today about the extent of the damage.
