Martina Hingis blasts past Kuznetsova in straight sets

Martina Hingis scored one of the biggest upsets of her comeback tonight at the Rogers Cup when she knocked out No. 4 seed Svetlana Kuznetsova in straight sets 7-6 (4), 6-3.

I guess this explains why I do not make a habit of calling matches in advance, because my guess at the outcome was for Kuznetsova, not Hingis to cruise in straight sets. However, at this point, I think the folks at the Rogers Cup are thrilled to have a player fans recognize still in the main draw. Seventh-seed Hingis is actually the highest seed still alive at the tournament, along with No. 9 Dinara Safina.

Martina is up against teenager Anna Chakvetadze in the semifinal tomorrow, and Dinara Safina will be taking on another teenager Ana Ivanovic.

If Hingis beats Chakvetadze tomorrow (and I really hope she will), she will overtake Nicole Vaidisova as #9 in the world and will most likely be seeded #8 at the Open since Kim has withdrawn. Also, Kuzzie’s loss tonight ensures that Dementieva will get a Top-4 seeding since Kim is most likely out.

Also, it looks like Davenport might have a razor-thin chance of staying in the top ten . . . at least until her points at New Haven come off.

I’m not sure that Davenport is gonna defend her title! She could clash against Amelie in the 1/4 1nd I’m defenitly sure that Amelie is gonna take her chance and go and finnally beat Lindsay after so many looses!!! ALLLEZ AME

Hey momofan - it is official now - Hingis is back in the top ten, even if she does not beat Chakvetadze.

Nexty - Lindsay has a tough draw, and if Sam Stosur could beat her in the first round at the JPMorgan Chase Open, Katarina Srebotnik has an excellent shot at defeating Davenport as well in the opening round. I’d like to see an Amelie/Davenport quarterfinal, but I just do not see Lindsay making it that far.

It’s official! Martina’s up to #9 now and will take over the #8 seeding at the Open from Nicole Vaidisova.

    Go Chuckie!
