Svetlana Kuznetsova is through to the Pilot Pen semifinal at New Haven, Connecticut today after defeating Elena Dementieva in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Both players struggled early on to hold serve, but Dementieva grabbed the first break of the match at one game all. Svetlana then came back from a couple of service breaks by Dementieva and managed to take the first set 6-3.
A lucky net cord handed Dementieva the opening break of the second set for an early lead of 3-1. Kuznetsova’s unforced errors continued to mount, and although Dementieva struggled to close out the set, she came back to force a third set 6-3.
Kuznetsova took advantage of a lengthy on-court discussion with her coach Stefan Ortega before starting the final set and even though Dementieva broke her serve once again in the first game, she came back to win the match 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Svetlana Kuznetsova will face the winner of the Justine Henin-Hardenne/Mara Santangelo match in the semifinals tomorrow.
