Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport cruise in US Open First Round

The US Open

The 2006 US Open has officially started and Justine Henin-Hardenne and Lindsay Davenport have already advanced to the second round of action. Rain postponed the start of today’s matches, but the clouds finally cleared for the start of tennis at Flushing Meadows.

Justine Henin-Hardenne advanced past an injured Maria Elena Camerin in the first match of the day on Arthur Ashe. The second-seed defeated Camerin, who was suffering from pain in her left thigh, in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Lindsay Davenport kicked off her pursuit of a fourth Grand Slam title by knocking out Klara Zakopalova 6-1, 6-4, and Elena Dementieva only had nine double faults in her 6-1, 6-4 victory over American Laura Granville.

Svetlana Kuznetsova must have been worried that history was about to be repeated today at the US Open. She lost in her opening round match last season, and barely escaped a second consecutive first round exit thanks to Germany’s Sandra Kloesel. Kloesel pushed Kuznetsova to three sets before the 2004 US Open champion was able to close out the match 6-2, 2-6, 6-3.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld became the first seeded casualty on the ladies side of the draw. France’s Aravane Rezai defeated the fifteenth seed in three sets 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Thanks for catching that - I’ve fixed the spelling.

I have heard a little bit about her financial problems, as well as the controversy surrounding her father. The New York Times has a story on her this morning and it seems that her financial status has not improved since her run at the French Open.

    tnx i already read it…
poor girl she has to buys her clothes alone with her money and she says she tries to hide the labels the way she can….
I mean if her father has unacceptable attitude the FFT (french tennis Federation) shouldn’t ban her (it’s exageration from me but I can’t find the word lol) and try to help her…
Do you imagine that in Birmingham when she hurt herself she wasn’t wearin’ the appropriate shoes cause youknow no sponsor….

What is being unstandable is to read in every single article on her (in french more than the rest) is that they need to talk about her Iranian origines and her father…every single article…And nothing about her game…

    poor girl again!
