Rain tried to dampen spirits at the start of the US Open, but the stars still came out and shined on the grounds of the now-official Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Justine Henin-Hardenne, Lindsay Davenport, Elena Dementieva, and Patty Schnyder are through to the second round, but Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Australia’s Alicia Molik were knocked out of the singles draw much soon than they had planned.
American youngster Vania King knocked out Alicia Molik, who was awarded a wildcard into the main draw, in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, and France’s Aravane Rezai defeated Groenefeld 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.
