NEW YORK — The US Open attracts some of the best journalists from around the world and I love reading all the intriguing and diverse articles from many of the top writers in tennis. Creative juices start to flow in the minds of writers from east and west, north and south, and many “can’t miss” articles are published over the two weeks at Flushing Meadows.
As most writers will admit, coming up with a title for their literary masterpiece – sometimes also known as a match report – is often the hardest part of the editing process. In support of the journalists that work week-in-and-week-out, I have decided to run a contest over the next few days in hopes of finding the best headline to come from the grounds of the US Open.
Unfortunately I cannot offer the writers more than the knowledge that their story was voted “best headline” from the 2006 US Open, but you, the readers of On the Baseline, will get not only the credit for finding the best story headline on the internet, but also an official US Open tennis cap.
Contest Rules:
- Leave your favorite headline, complete with a link to the article in the comments form below.
- Traditional Online News/Blog submissions are welcome, but please do not submit one of your own articles!
- You can enter the contest as many times as you wish.
- Only headlines that apply to the women’s main draw of the US Open are eligible.
- Any entries that include profanity or vulgar content will be deleted and ineligible for the contest.
- Contest ends on September 11, 2006 and the winner will be announced by the end of that week.
- One prize – an official US OPEN tennis cap – will be awarded to the person that submits the best headline.

NEW YORK // Gasping for breath after long exchanges, Serena Williams ran out of energy and answers against Amelie Mauresmo.
In a showdown between two women who’ve been ranked No. 1 and own a total of nine Grand Slam titles, the top-seeded Mauresmo won nine of the last 12 points Monday night to beat the unseeded Williams 6-4, 0-6, 6-2 and reach the U.S. Open quarterfinals.
