Amelie Mauresmo withdraws from doubles, Rain Delay Continues

2006 US Open - Empty Arthur Ashe Stadium

NEW YORK — The start of today’s matches at the US Open has been delayed at least until 12:00PM. The USTA is hoping that there may be “significant dry time” after 4PM ET today, but there is still going to be about a 55% chance of rain this evening.

It is not raining too hard right now on the grounds, but the constant drizzle, chill, and winds will keep the players in the locker rooms until the conditions start to improve. Even if it does stop raining, the wind would cause more than enough havoc, and there is a possibility of gusts up to 45MPH.

For those that were wondering about the sudden and unexplained disappearance of Amelie Mauresmo and Svetlana Kuznetsova from the ladies doubles draw last night, I talked to the WTA staff and they withdrew because Mauresmo is suffering from an adductor strain. At this point, I do not know if this will hurt her chances in the singles draw, but I will see if I can track down more information as the day progresses. They have been replaced in the main draw by Camille Pin and Milagros Sequera.

Update:Match play is now scheduled to begin at 2:00PM, weather permitting!

thanks for the thing about Ame…I guessed it was that and now you’ve confirmed it…
    Poor Ame :(

Oh no, I hope she’s alright. She played Meghann Shaughnessy without the strapping and did her patented “Momojump” at the end of the match and looked alright so I hope it’s just precautionary. In any case, I don’t *think* she’ll be getting onto the court anytime soon today, so she should be able to get enough rest before her third-rounder.

    P.S. Serena/Ivanovic, 7-6(1), 6-2. Go Serena!

Thanks for the updates and the info on the Doubles withdrawal - and BUMMER about Amelie’s adductor strain - that’s the same one she hurt in the Wimbledon final.
    Dang!
Well, it ***** we don’t get to see Amelie & Sveta in Doubles, but I’m sending good vibes Amelie’s way for Singles - I hope the thigh strapping isn’t necessary, but either way I’ll be cheering for her.

Now, we all know there’s such a thing as a rain dance, and someone’s obviously been overdoing it - what say we all do a sun dance?!
I have no doubt we can incorporate the burning of candles in there somewhere, Momofan! (Yes, I’ve been lurking for a while….)

*crosses fingers & toes for good weather*
