NEW YORK — Lots of tennis is going on today at the US Open, and already three women have booked themselves berths in the quarterfinal round.
Aravane Rezai put up a good fight against Elena Dementieva, but could not continue her momentum into the second set. Dementieva was not playing her best tennis with eight double faults and five breaks of her serve, but it was enough to reach the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-4. Her left thigh was heavily taped, and her mother Vera did confirm to me that Elena has been having problems with it. It did affect her movement some during the one-hour, twenty minute match, and it looked as if she had trouble running down some of Rezai’s shots.
Justine Henin-Hardenne crushed Shahar Peer 6-1, 6-0 on Arthur Ashe this morning and only had six unforced errors during the fifty-minute match.
Jelena Jankovic grabbed a surprise upset over Svetlana Kuznetsova and is through to her first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Kuznetsova took the first set 7-6(5), before Jankovic recovered to win the final two 6-3 ,6-2. I watched the last set and Jankovic’s performance has improved so much over the past several months. She was cracking clean winners, and only had twenty-four unforced errors compared to Svetlana Kuznetsova forty-six.
STILL TO COME:
Patty Schnyder vs. Lindsay Davenport
Dinara Safina vs. Virginie Razzano
Serena Williams vs. Amelie Mauresmo
Maria Sharapova vs. Na Li
Anna Chakvetadze vs. Tatiana Golovin
