US Open Tennis Schedule for Monday, September 4, 2006

NEW YORK — By the end of this evening, baring any unforeseen delays, only eight women will be left in the singles main draw. I always thought Grand Slams flew bye when at home, but they go even faster when you are trying to keep up with everything on the ground.
Unfortunately, today is my last day of blogging live from the US Open, as I have another trip this week that was planned before I received my media credentials. It has been an awesome experience seeing a Grand Slam from a different perspective, and I’m looking forward to repeating my live reporting again in the near future. I have been so busy over the past week, that I still have plenty of source material for several interesting posts, including Justine Henin-Hardenne and Francesca Schiavone’s thoughts on the upcoming Fed Cup final.
Before I leave for home on Tuesday, I’ll still be spending today enjoying the Round of 16 matches. A few new faces are lurking in the draw, but the main contenders for the title, Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport, Justine Henin-Hardenne,Amelie Mauresmo, Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva, and Svetlana Kuznetsova are all still standing. You know there is a great deal of depth on the WTA tour when six of the sixteen women in the fourth round are previous Grand Slam winners.
Fourth Round Matches
Serena Williams vs. (1) Amelie Mauresmo
Shahar Peer vs. (2) Justine Henin-Hardenne
(24) Na Li vs. (3) Maria Sharapova
Aravane Rezai vs. (4) Elena Dementieva
(19) Jelena Jankovic vs. (6) Svetlana Kuznetsova
(10) Lindsay Davenport vs. (7) Patty Schnyder
Virginie Razzano vs. (12) Dinara Safina
(27) Tatiana Golovin vs. (23) Anna Chakvetadze

Nexty - I think the Aravane will have to win in straights if she is going to be able to get past Dementieva.
Elena’s a self-confessed slow starter, and if Rezai can build enough momentum in the first set, she may be able to reach the quarterfinals. Elena may have a bad serve, but I would not want to face her in a deciding set when she has finally warmed up and started playing like the top five player that she is.

I was watching tennis on the USA Channel (scheduled Sept 4th 7PM to 11PM). I left the room for a few minutes & came back to find wrestling on the USA channel. I flipped through the channels & found the US Open on CNBC. Hewitt/Gasquet match is on right now at 10:45 PM. What gives?

Claire - I don’t know what’s going on with the coverage, but I have heard of other instances where people were watching the tennis, only to have it suddenly switch.
I don’t know anything “official”, but what probably happened was that USA Network had already scheduled in wrestling, and because they rely a lot on their loyal wrestling fans, they probably decided to work out a deal with CNBC and bump the tennis coverage to another channel.
