Italy won their first Fed Cup championship title yesterday in a 3-2 victory over the nation of Belgium. Italy and Belgium were tied 2-2 when Justine Henin-Hardenne retired from the deciding doubles match because of a knee injury.

Francesca Schiavone, Flavia Pennetta, and the rest of the Italian ladies played incredible tennis over the last couple of rounds and definitely deserved to bring home the most prestigious team title in women’s tennis.

You can read the entire final summary on the Fed Cup website, as well as enjoy the images and audio clips from the momentous weekend in Charleroi, Belgium.

I’ll be posting more on the extent of Justine Henin-Hardenne’s injury as soon as more conclusive information is known.
