Aces
Martina Hingis started her pursuit of a third title of the 2006 season strong at the Zurich Open yesterday. Hingis handed Anna-Lena Groenefeld an opening set bagel before closing the first round match out 6-0, 7-5. (Hingis makes winning start in Zurich)
In case anyone else was wondering where the channel VERSUS (the station airing the WTA Championships) mysteriously appeared from, I just realized it’s the old Outdoor Life Network (OLN) with a new name. (Outdoor Life Network now known as Versus)
Tennis.com’s ticker is reporting that Maria Sharapova has decided to enter the Generali Ladies Linz tournament next week. Sounds like she’s pushing herself to get as many ranking points as she can before Madrid. (The Ticker)
Ana Ivanovic reached a new career high of No. 13 yesterday when the new rankings were published. (Career best ranking)
Matt Cronin has a great piece on FOX Sports discussing Amelie Mauresmo’s chances of capturing the No. 1 ranking, as well as her top competitors Justine Henin-Hardenne and Maria Sharapova. (Mauresmo looks to maintain No. 1 ranking)
Martina Hingis has committed to play the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts next season. The Tier III tennis tournament will begin on December 31st. (Hingis to return to Gold Coast)
Who knew that the movie King Kong had something to do with unequal pay for women at Wimbledon? Regardless of the movie references, John McEnroe does have a good point. (McEnroe unhappy with Wimbledon over unequal pay)
Faults
Mary Pierce may just need to call it quits on her 2006 tennis season and focus on heading into Australia healthy. The two-time Grand Slam champion has only won four matches since February and lost yesterday to Katarina Srebotnik 6-3, 7-5 in the first round at Zurich. Also, Pierce’s ranking has slipped down to No. 29.
Sania Mirza’s ranking continues to fall and the Indian star is now to No. 68 on the Sony Ericsson WTA rankings. (New Delhi: Sania Slips to 68th in WTA Rankings)
On Court
ZURICH: Alicia Molik vs. Shahar Peer, Tatiana Golovin vs. Nicole Vaidisova, Daniela Hantuchova vs. Patty Schnyder
Be sure to check out the rest of today’s schedule at the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour’s Order of Play page.
